Poland made their first World Cup appearance in the 1939 series when Italy defeated Hungary 4-2 to win the tournament. Other countries that made their debuts that year were Norway, Cuba, and the Netherlands East Indies, and to much to everyone’s surprise, made it to the quarterfinals.
Even though Poland didn’t get past the group stage, fans turned out in full support of the team’s short run, like this one photographed at one of the Group H matches. To many soccer fans, this was the quintessential poster girl image for the 2018 Russian FIFA World Cup. Could she bag that honor twice at the Qatar World Cup in 2022?
