In 2018, Saudi Arabia allowed its women to travel abroad and watch the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as part of an entire slew of changes geared towards fostering inclusivity. This fan was among the lucky few to make the journey. The state’s first inclusive all-fans-welcome event occurred in a UAE stadium in January of the same year.
Contrary to her bemused looks, her national team was on the receiving end, losing 2-1 to Egypt after a valiant effort. The Middle Eastern country didn’t fare any better at its fifth appearance at the four-year event, leaving at the group stage after losses to Russia and Uruguay.
