Willie Mays, 89, Born in 1931 – New York Giants Center Fielder
Willie Mays seems destined to be a force in sports from birth, having a semi-pro baseball player father and a high school track star mother. Recruited to play for the New York Giants (now the San Francisco Giants) when he was just in high school, Mays astounded sports fans with his wind-like speed and powerful swings.
After 22 seasons of playing Major League Baseball and winning two MVP awards, Mays announced his retirement in 1973. The Baseball Hall of Famer continues to cherish his time in the sandlot to this day with the release of his memoir, 24: Life Stories and Lessons from the Say Hey Kid, on May 12, 2020.
