The calf was already exhausted and hoarse from all its distressed cries. But hearing its entire family’s voices raised together had a near-miraculous effect. With a herculean effort well beyond its tender years, the weary infant scrambled up the ditch’s wall with renewed vigor. It almost escaped the pit, but the earth gave way, and it slid back to the bottom.
