Things are Getting Out of Hand

By now, the calf’s cries had attracted the entire herd’s attention, and all the elephants had gathered around the pit. Nervously shaking their heads from side to side, the adults jostled around the trapped young one, hoping for a miracle.

All they could do was make sure the little one could see them clearly from down below. They hoped the sight of its family would reassure the calf and perhaps even encourage it to keep trying to escape.
