Arguably our most significant takeaway from this herd’s experience is realizing that animals feel and express emotions as we do. When the herd welcomed its lost member back, they wouldn’t leave its side. Further, while the young one was in trouble, no one ate or drank until it was free.

Moreover, they were now extra careful crossing the river, even though they had done it many times before. Pairs of adults placed calves between them to keep a closer eye.
