Hot Balloon Tragedy Claims the Lives of 11
In January 2012, five couples and a pilot boarded a hot air balloon intending to enjoy a scenic ride in Carterton. Little did they know the ride and their lives would end horribly. Around 7:20 in the morning, the balloon struck a high-voltage power line while attempting to land.
Eyewitnesses said it caught on fire and broke free before plunging to the ground ablaze and blackened. As police arrived, all 11 people were dead. Investigations into this horrific disaster continue.
