Ghost Town or Montana’s Most Intact Cultural Gem – The Story of Garnet

Delia Leyvens Mar 30, 2023

A Town That Faced Double Tragedy

Garnet’s history is one of hardship and tragedy. Established for gold mining, the town suffered a rapid population decline when the gold ran out and later faced a devastating fire that destroyed it in 1912. The remaining residents left during WWI, and Garnet became a ghost town.

Today, the Bureau of Land Management seeks volunteers to help revive Garnet. The opportunity includes accommodation in a rustic cabin, free food, and a job as a tour operator. However, volunteers will earn only $29 a day, and the living conditions lack electricity and running water. Despite the challenges, Garnet’s unique history and haunting beauty may be worth the sacrifice for some.
