A Rare Image of the Titanic Afloat

This is the last known photograph of the RMS Titanic on the ocean’s surface. The image was taken during the ship’s maiden voyage to New York. Two days later, the Titanic was at the bottom of the North Atlantic, and 1,514 people died.

Dubbed the “unsinkable,” the vessel was designed to stay afloat even when internal flooding occurred or when the hull was pierced. It was believed that the Titanic hit an iceberg that tore a 350-foot gash, allowing water to infiltrate the ship, and making it sink.
