Named after the great King of France, Louis XIV, Louisiana’s nickname is “The Pelican State,” owing to its state bird. Its Port of South Louisiana is one of the largest seaports with regards to volume shipped. It is the most extensive producer of salt in America and is known for its natural gas and oil resources.

2021 saw people migrate out of the state, out of which over 50% cited job opportunities as the primary reason. The following year in May, Miguel Cardona, the U.S. Secretary of Education, announced three students from Louisiana as part of the United States Presidential Scholars Program.
