Hamad bin Khalifa Al ThaniĀ – Greek Islands, $11 Million
When Greece fell into a financial crisis, the government decided to lease off the islands on its coast. This alerted the former Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who decided to buy some islands to develop for the pleasure of his 24 children and three wives.
The deal took 18 months to complete before the Emir parted with $11 million and received six islands, the biggest private investment in Greece. While the Emir planned to build a palace on each island, Greek law only allows a home of 250 square feet per property. It’s rumored that the Emir wants to buy 24 islands, one for each of his children.
