Aristotle Onassis – Skorpios, $142 Million
Aristotle Onassis was one of the wealthiest people in the world, thanks to amassing the world’s largest shipping fleet. He was also one of the earliest recorded millionaires to purchase a private island. He bought the Skorpios islands in Greece and married former US first lady Jacqueline Kennedy there in 1968.
He built three residences, a helicopter pad, and boat quay but never slept on the island. He opted instead to stay on his Yacht, Christina, which he moored in a specially built harbor. After passing away in 1975, the island was passed down to his children, and in 2013, his granddaughter Athina Onassis sold the island forĀ over $140 million.
