Finding a Parisian Treasure
The cleanup of Canal Saint-Martin was part of a larger effort to restore Paris’s historic waterways and bring life back to neglected spaces. In early January 2016, workers began draining the canal to clear out years of debris, silt, and litter.
It had been 15 years since the last major cleanup in 2001, and the canal was in desperate need of attention. The project aimed not just to remove the waste but to repair and refresh the area, ensuring it remained beautiful and functional. This operation came with a hefty price tag of 9.5 million euros, or roughly $10.4 million.
