The Rule of Thumb
To break a world record, many factors are at play, and in some cases, these factors have had an unfair advantage on some participants. In order to give everyone a fair shot, standardization of rules and regulations is imperative, which is where the Guinness committee comes in.
A Guinness committee is in charge of making sure that no records are broken. If they did not do this, there would be a total anarchy, and everyone would keep their own record, which would devalue the whole system. By doing so, more people were prevented from dominating categories based on financial or geographical superiority.
