Too Casual A Weather Report
While it is important to clear the air of any misinformation about weather forecasts, it is also crucial that the correct information is relayed accurately. Weatherman Michael Fish learned this the hard way when he casually and non-urgently reported on a call to ‘BBC’ where a woman was afraid that a hurricane was on the way.
Technically, Fish was right; the great storm in the United Kingdom in 1987 was a cyclone. However, because this was not made public, people were ill-prepared when the raging winds battered and devastated the nation resulting in massive losses in property and lives. This necessitated an apology from the broadcaster on air for the laid-back approach on the matter.
