The Delightful Aches & Pains Reliever
We now know the popular carbonated beverage that was the subject of this questionable ad from the 1890s. Before the soda company became a household name, they touted their beverage as a wonder drink that did much more than quench your thirst. Their delightful brain tonic supposedly also doubled up as an aches and pains reliever.
They got away with it until the Food and Drugs Act came into effect in 1906. Also before 1904, cocaine was allegedly one of the secret ingredients used to produce the delightful tonic. Earlier advertisements touted the beverage as an intellectual drink that contained the stimulating properties of the kola and cocoa plants.
