The advertising industry has long stuck to the model of presenting ideas and evoking feelings with the use of images, texts, and in recent times, audio as well as video content. Promotional material relies on various persuasion techniques to sell a brand/ product and as seen with these vintage ads, sometimes the marketing strategies are chauvinistic, demeaning, and degrading to women.
This men’s footwear advertisement is such an example. We believe the theory was based on women’s supposed attention to detail, particularly when it comes to the shoes a man wears. They took it down to a dehumanizing level with the tagline and having the female model pose on the floor in her birthday suit.
