What’s Really on Sale?
The objectification of women in advertising is yet another marketing tool that hasn’t entirely faded into obscurity. ’30s cigarette advertisements featured female sirens as a marketing strategy to attract men. The use of pin-up girls on such promotional materials grew as the decades went by.
Tiparillo cigarettes were amongst the brands that shamelessly objectified women to drive sales. With women’s cleavage exposed and intense eye contact, anyone would be forgiven to think that they are selling something other than cigarettes. Again, not much has changed these days in that regard, except that, we dare say, cigarette advertisements are a bit more modest.
