Shar-Pei
Although their place of origin remains hotly debated, experts believe that Shar-Peis dates back to 2002 B.C. due to the statues discovered that share an uncanny resemblance to this dog. They originated in China, hence the name “Shar-Pei,” which literally means sand skin, pertaining to the dog’s sandy, rough coat.
Shar-Peis are very distinctive due to their wrinkled skin, which the American Kennel Club said was because they were bred to protect the royal palace. Their thick, loose skin then helps them survive dog fights because other creatures wouldn’t be able to reach their vital organs. As such, they make for great companions and guard dogs.
